"Out of the dark we came, into the dark we go. Like a storm-driven bird at night we fly out of the Nowhere; for a moment our wings are seen in the light of the fire, and, lo! We are gone again into the Nowhere."
" 'Adventurer' -- he that goes out to meet whatever may come. Well, that is what we all do in the world one way or another . . ."
Sir Henry Rider Haggard (1856 - 1925), well known British writer, author of more than thirty adventure novels.
Rider Haggard was born at Bradenham, Norfolk England in 1856, to Sir William Meybohm Rider Haggard, a lawyer, and Ella Doveton, an amateur author and poet.
At the age of 19 Rider Haggard was sent to South Africa by his father, and was employed as a secretary to Sir Henry Bulwer, Governor of Natal colony. In 1877 he joined the staff of the special commissioner. Next year he became Master and Registrar of the High Court in the Transvaal .
Extensive travels in South Africa inspired his interest of ancient cultures and savage civilizations and he created a whole series of spellbinding fiction stories, set in far-flung corners of the world: Iceland , Constantinople , Mexico , Ancient Egypt and Africa . During his time in Africa, Haggard was fascinated with the Zulu culture. Magic of this culture, together with old Zulu legends, encouraged his imagination and became an essential part of many Haggard's fiction stories.
